Volunteers play an essential
role in the work of the Maasai American Organization. Over
the past five years we have taken well over 75 volunteers
with us on our twice-annual treks to Kenya. Our
volunteers pay their own transportation and expenses. They
come from all walks of life and from a wide range
of all ages. But each and everyone has been
driven by the desire to learn and inspired by the
aspiration to serve. In the field they participate
in the on-going MAO projects lending their energy
and expertise to these efforts.
Volunteers
live as simply as possible. They often ride
public transportation to the field. They eat
typical Kenyan meals of ugali, sukumawiki and chai. They
put their air mattresses and sleeping bags on the
concrete floor of a small metal building to sleep. Wash
their own clothes. Carry water from the water
source and then purify it with Water Guard. Dig
their own trench latrines.
In general,
we want our volunteers to experience life the way
our Kenyan co-workers experience it, so that they
will leave Kenya a clearer understanding of everyday
challenges of life in the Mara.
